Mitä opin? What did I learn?

Käytin työssä kierrätyskankaita, jotka olivat entisessä elämässään tyynynpäällisiä ja verhoa. Työn aloittaessani tyynynpäälliset olivat vielä ommeltu yhteen, kunnes hoksasin kirjonnan olevan paljon, paljon helpompaa kun viitsii ensin ratkoa saumat auki. Ja koska kyseessä oli kierrätyskangas, oli selvää että se oli kulunut ja kaipasi paikka paikoin saksia. Onneksi vain saumat olivat nuhraantuneet ja itse kangas oli hyvässä kunnossa!

In my work I used recycled fabrics, other being cushion cover in its past life, other being curtains. When I started to work, the cushion cover was still sewed together and I soon noticed it's better to take it to pieces. Then embroydery was a lot easier! And then I also had an opportunity to check the seams and clean those up a bit. Luckily only the seams were little wore out and rest of the fabrics were in good condition!

Olen huomannut, että liika suunnittelu ja sommittelu vie työstä hauskuuden, joten en tätäkään työtä sen kummemmin suunnitellut. Kuitenkin pieni ajatus työjärjestykselle olisi voinut olla paikallaan, koska kangas oli paksua ja paksuni entisestään siihen ommeltujen "oksien" ja "lehtien" myötä. En siis loppujen lopuksi käyttänyt kirjontakehystä kuin vähän aluksi. Sitten pitikin olla tarkkana pistojen kireyksien kanssa! Mutta hyvinhän siinä kävi.

I have noticed that too much planning and designig kill the fun part of the work, so I didn't plan too much this work either. Although, little thought for working order would have been good as the fabric was quite thick and got thicker after adding "branches" and "leaves". So after all I didn't use an embroidery hoop much and that made me check every stitch and its tightness! But everything went well after all.

Ja koska en ole juurikaan harrastanut käsinkirjontaa, käytin valtaosin ihan peruspistoja. Paitsi lehdissä, joita varten opettelin suljetun kreetanpiston.

And because I have not done much hand embroidery, I used mostly basic stitches. Except in leaves, where I used knotted Cretan stitch which I learnt just for this project.

Mikä tuntui vaikealta? What was difficult?

Jo tehtävänanto tuntui vaikealta, sillä kuva piti fyysisesti kiinnittää työhön mukaan. Toisin sanoen, työtä ei voi pestä tai sitten kuvan täytyy olla helposti irrotettavissa ja kiinnitettävissä uudelleen. Koska tila kodissamme on rajalllista, vierastan ajatusta "pelkän" taiteen tekemisestä, siksi haluan tehdä taideteoksia, joilla on jokin käyttötarkoitus.

Already the exercise handout felt difficult because the picture had to be attched into the work physically. In other word, the work can not be washed or the the picture should be taken off and put on again easily. Because room in our home is limited, I sort of shun making "just" art. That's why I prefer making art with some function.

Miten jatkotyöstin ja kehitin asiaa? How did I developed the issue?

Koska kuvan kiinnittäminen työhön oli riskialtista ja pelkäsin repiväni kuvan vahingossa, laitoin kontaktimuovin kuvan taakse. Se teki kuvasta jämäkämmän ja samalla teki kiinnittämisestäkin helpompaa. Kokonaan muovittaminen tai laminointi olisi mahdollistanut työn edes jonkinlaisen pesemisen, mutta toisaalta se olisi tuonut työhön kiiltävän läiskän joka ei olisi istunut kasviväreihin ja luonnonläheisyyteen.

There are many risks in attaching picture into the work and I was afraid I would tear the picture by accident so I added contact plastic behind it. It made the picture stronger and also made attaching easier. Covering the whole picture would have enabled some kind of washing but on the other hand the picture would then have been shiny which wouldn't fit together with plant-dyed yarns and naturalness.

Kun pensaassa on oksat, linnut ja pesä, tarvitaan myös lehtiä. Paljon lehtiä. Opettelin tekemään suljetun kreetanpiston, koska siitähän saa vallan mainioita lehtiä! Tässä kuvia työn edetessä.

When there are branches, birds and a nest in a bush, there has to be also leaves. A lot of leaves. I learned to do a knotted Cretan stich, because that makes just wonderful leaves! Here some pictures from the work.

Toinen tyynyistä on jo valmis, mutta haluan esitellä nämä vaihe vaiheelta otetut kuvat yhdessä.

Other of the cushions is already done, but I want to show these step-by-step pictures together.

Sekä kangaskuvat, että itse paperinen kuva on nyt liitetty molempiin tyynyihin. Kyllä, näinkin aikaisessa vaiheessa! Koska paperi saattaisi sellaisenaan revetä, liimasin taakse kontaktimuovia joka vähän jämäköittää kuvaa.

Both fabric pics and the paper pics are now applied to the cushions. Yes, already in this point! Because paper pictures could be ripped, I used contact plastic behind it to make the pic firmer.

Seuraavaksi virkkasin ketjusilmukkapätkiä oksiksi ja ompelin ne kiinni oksiksi. Käytin erivärisiä lankoja saadakseni oksiin elävyyttä.

Next I crocheted chains and sewed those in as branches. By using different colors of yarns I tried to make the branches more real-looking.

Päädyin kuvavalinnassani sinikan kuvaan ja tästä se nyt sitten lähtee; Kuva Inspiraation Lähteenä. Otetaan pala kangasta, joka on joskus ollut tavallinen tyynynpäällinen, viime kesän kasvivärjättyjä lankoja, pari kangaskuvaa keittiön verhokankaasta ja neula. Ja lisäksi päätin tehdä tästä projektista kaksiosaisen, koska tyynyjähän ei koskaan ole vain yksi.

From the pictures I chose the picture of a bluebird and here it goes: Picture as a Source of Inspiration. Lets take piece of a fabric, which used to be just an ordinary cushion cover, some plant-dyed yarns from last summer, few fabric pictures from a fabric which I have used in my kitchen curtains and a needle. And I decided to make this a two-piece project because there have to be more than one cushions.

Aplikoin kuvat kankaille vain vähän suunnittelua käyttäen. En aio suunnitella tätä työtä sen kummemmin, on paljon hauskempaa luoda sitä mukaa kuin inspiraatiota tulee. Ja suunnitelmathan ovat aina paljon hienompia kuin toteutuneet työt, ainakin omalla kohdallani, joten parempi olla asettamatta rimaa liian korkealle!

I appliqued the pictures to the fabrics without too much planning. I'm not going to plan this work too much, it's much more fun to create when the inspiration comes. And plannings are always way more fancier that the actual work, at least in my case, so it's better not to set the goal too high!
